The event is coming up soon, October 23rd, 24th, 25th. Friday and Saturday will be 12 hour days, from 9am to 9pm. Sunday will be from 9 to 2. This is very important. Not only do we have to pay $100 for this event, but this is a perfect time to make money off our jewelry and T-shirt sales, advertise about our benefit concert, and raise awareness for our organization and our cause.

Anyone who was not at the meeting, or did not sign up for a time, please do so. This is imperative, because if at ANYTIME we leave our station unattended, we will be ASKED TO LEAVE the event.

Benefit Concert:

It is official! We will be hosting a Benefit Concert Monday, November 9th at the Warehouse off of Gaines and Gay street in Tallahassee FL!

We have 8 possible bands that may be playing. Stay tuned to find out for sure who will be there to represent Dare to Love: Project Haiti!!

Members, we nee to start advertising for this NOW!
These are the ways in which we intend on advertising, please read and look for your name for what the group is counting on you to do to advertise for this HUGE event.

•	Stall Stories: Kara
• CD’s to hand out as samples. They will have one or two songs from each of our features artists as well as our organization’s name and the date/location of our event: JUSTIN
•	Chalk around the FSU campus: EVERYONE
•	Fliers, printed and creative! CYBILL AND CHRIS RINCON
•	Poster CHRIS RINCON
•	Facebook events KARA
•	Way FM- ALEXA
•	FSU Radio LINDSEY
• T-shirts advertising the concert (different from our regular shirts) if EVERYONE could start bringing some shirts in that you are ok with painting, that would be great

Everyone needs to talk to their respective bands to ensure which bands are able to do it on November 9th at 8pm. This is how we will goa bout deciding who we want to play: availability first.
SAM: please talk to your bands
CYBILL- is confirming that all the members of Starlight Getaway can play for us
JUSTIN- is making sure Emily can play
REID- please make sure Tyler Dennings can play

Doz- sam
Phlox-sam
Icarus account-chris
Everletter-kara/chris
Emily-justin
Tyler dennings-reid
Pawns of the universe-sam
The Paranormals- cybill
Away with you- cybill
Starlight Getaway- Cybill

Anyone that is our connection to a band, please make sure that DTL has at least one or two songs from your artist so that we can make CDs and use them to advertise. Please double check that this is ok with your bands before we do it. Email the mp3s to Kara, Chris Rincon, DJ, and Justin (check the member contact excel document for email addresses)

Any bands that we are unable to use this semester we will try to have play for us for our Spring concert.

Starlight Getaway is playing this coming Monday, October 12, 09 at Big Daddy’s on the Tennessee Strip. We want to try to get over there and support them, especially if they are going to be playing for us. The meeting may be rescheduled.

T-shirts

It turns out that as long as SGA is not funding the shirts we sell, we do not need their approval. For shirts they do pay for, we will need approval. This week we intend on getting the shirts made from an outside source so that we are free to sell them at the Christian Expression Concert and other events. Next week we will work on getting approval from SGA and having them print the rest that we will give away with Member Dues and Bonus tickets. JUSTIN is going to contact the Tshirt place

Support Letters

Support letters were due this week. We collected some from Cybil, DJ, Alexa and Reid. Good job to everyone who got some letters written. Please mail them (as many as possible) out as quickly as you can. Keep the group posted on your success.

Everyone else needs to start at least thinking about what they would like to say and who they think would be good candidates to send letters to. Please try to have something prepared for next weeks meeting. T

Outreach

We would love to be involved with the other Haitian-oriented organizations on campus. James Thomson has attended several Global Haiti Initiative meetings, and we would like to have a representative of DTL at all of their meetings. We would also like to spare one member each week to sit on the Haitian Culture Club meetings that occur at the same time as our meetings each Monday in the union.
There is another group, Haitian Outreach Committee that we would love to be involved with. We will find out when their meetings are and see what we can do about having a member attend their general body meetings

Our goal is to eventually have one of each mentioned group have a member of theirs come to our meetings and collaborate on our like-minded goals.

General

Aaron Lindhorst has completed his documentary on Dare to Love: Project Haiti. The 3:30 video can be found on Youtube and Facebook. Here is a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k82JEDsCPA Please tell all of your friends!

We will soon have an optional Member Due. It will be $10. Any Dare to Love: Project Haiti member that pays their dues will receive a free T-shirt. If anyone has friends of family that is interested in being an honorary member of DTL, they may pay dues and receive a free shirt as well.

Unless we take a group filed strip to Big Daddy’s the meeting wil be held in the same place next week. FSU Student Ballrooms Room Number 323 at 8pm on Monday, October 12th. See you there!

Welcome to Sean, who has had several Haitian students live with him, and Ashley, who has been to Haiti and is looking to go back! We hope to se you again next week. Creole How are you: como ou ye Very well: muy bien Not bad: Papi Mal Thank you: mesi Whats your name: como ou rele? My name is: mwen rele ___ Market Wednesday 8-10 Justin 11-1 Alexa and Katie 10-11 DJ 12-1 Sam 1-2 Linds SGA This year SGA has re-organized their finances. There is a travel and resources committee that we need to contact. In order to get funding from SGA, we must file an exact estimation of what our costs and expectations are. We are not eligible to get money unless we have an educational component that we can bring back to the university. We must quantify our trip and show that we are making a difference, and giving something back to students at FSU. If we can write a convincing enough proposal, we must make sure we take notes and do small things to make sure we can bring things back. If we do qualify for funding, we can use it for airfare, room/board, or food. This is an application that we must re fill out each year. If we are unable to get it this year, we will certainly be prepared for it next year. The group needs to designate someone to speak with out advisor, Doctor Watts about sand filters and other elements pertaining to civil and environmental engineering that we may be able to use to obtain SGA funding. In addition to funding for our travel expenses, we are seeking money from SGA for T-shirts. We are not allowed to sell these shirts, or anything else that SGA gives us funding for. Christian Expression Event Because we are a non-profit organization we are able to get our table at the Christian Expression Event for $100 instead of $200. This is a great advantage to us. We need to make sure we have plenty of things to sell, including our jewelry and T-shirts. We will be making dirt cookies to display, but because we do not have a food license we will not be selling edible cookies. We also need to kick it into high gear to ensure that we have the tablecloths completely painted and sewn together by the time the even takes place. We also need to make sure the backboard is complete with pictures and facts. LINDSEY needs to call the FL Department of Revenue to give them our tax number because we have to collect tax at this event. We will still be charging flat fees to customers and we will work out what tax to pay later. T-shirts Unfortunately, the $5 T-shirts are not going to plausible because our shirts are double sided. We are in the process of looking for a place to print them for cheap in addition to the SGA funded T-shirts so that we able to sell them at events. Benefit Concert For the first semester’s Benefit Concert we have decided to go back to the Warehouse. We are only able to get a limited number of dates at $75, all of them Mondays. For $100 we may be able to get a Saturday night, but the chances of this are small and running out quickly. The group voted that they felt Saturdays were more promising than Mondays. Cybil’s group, Starlight Getaway, will be going out of town November 8th to record an album so our hopeful date of November 14th or 9th is out of the question if we want them to perform. What we need to do now is decide if we want to reschedule around them or find a band to replace them and hope that Starlight Getaway is able to play for our second semester concert. Luckily, she has another band that is willing to play for us as long as it is not on November 4th or 5th. JUSTIN is going to the warehouse on Wednesday to talk to the Warehouse about what we can work out. Tickets: will be $10 at the door, assuming we still have all the bands we have on the list now. We will also have premium tickets that come with a free Dare To Love: Project Haiti bracelet and free t-shirt. These will cost $20. For our next semester concert, we need to work on getting Floyds. Our goal is to have a location, time, and bands all set up and secured by the time our first semester concert takes place. Any bands that we are unable to have perform this semester is more than welcome, and encouraged, to play for us next semester. By the time our Second Semester concert occurs, the group should be well into planning for Fall 2010’s concert. Working ahead of time is the only way to get things accomplished, especially when dealing with so many complicated factors. Support Letters We are asking that EVERYONE bring in his or her templates for support letters to the next meeting. We would also appreciate if you made a list of whom you intend to send your letters to. This will inspire other members to send them to people they hadn’t thought to send a letter to. If you are feeling especially productive, print out all your letters and have envelopes addressed and stamped and ready to go. We are asking that we bring them to the meeting so we can see who has made progress and so that we can share our ideas with each other. It is optimal to send at least ten letters. Lindsey is our success story; she made enough money off of support letters alone to go on our trip to Haiti TWICE! It really works. This is so that we can supplement our earnings from fundraisers. Hopefully within a few semesters we will be so great at what we do here that we won’t even need support letters, although they are always a great idea. General We will soon have an optional Member Due. It will be $10. Any Dare to Love: Project Haiti member that pays their dues will receive a free T-shirt. If anyone has friends of family that is interested in being an honorary member of DTL, they may pay dues and receive a free shirt as well. This week Dare To Love: Project Haiti was featured in a Documentary by Media Production Student Aaron Lindhorst. As soon as Kara has the footage it will posted for everyone to see. Alexa was proactive this week and contacted WAY FM Radio. They agreed to play a PSA with information about DTL’s Benefit Concert. As soon as we have the information KARA is going to type up what we want them to say and we will be played on their two Tallahassee stations. This means we will be on THREE radio stations!! Way to go Alexa! We will be having our meeting at the same time, Monday at 8pm, in the same place, FSU Student Ballroom Room Number 323, next week. See you there!!

21 September 2009 Meeting Minutes

This meeting was a field trip meeting, at the Starbucks on campus rather than our regular meeting room.
Justin addressed the group with ideas on how to be more affective. We must start assigning tasks to particular people so that we are able to be more efficient and we assure that things get done. We are also going to work on communication. Everyone should know everyone else’s contact information, not just the officers. We’re all friends here! Look for the excel document attached for the names of members as well as their email addresses and phone numbers

Benefit Concert
Cybill did her homework and made a list of places around town that we can potentially hold our first semester Benefit Concert.

North FL fairgrounds: as long as it doe not interrupt the fair taking place from 5 November- 15 November. Their number is: 850-878-3247 and KARA is in charge of contacting them this week, preferable by WEDNESDAY

The Moon – 850-878-6900. Lindsey is in charge of contacting them.

Club downunder – 850-644 MORE. Katie, Krista are in charge

Engine room- 850-222-8090 DJ and Chris Rincon are in charge

Floyds- Before we can continue with them, we must have all of our potential bands create a facebook page, assuming they don’t already have one. The only way we can have a show at Floyds is if each band adds Floyds as a friend on Myspace. 850-22-3506. On hold until further notice.

Big Daddys- 850- 561-6449. Reid is in charge of contacting them.

Warehouse- Justin will be handling them

Again, the list of potential bands include:

Emily
Tyler Denning
Starlight getaway
Icarrus Account
Pawns of the Universe
Phlox
Everletter

We would love to have mp3s of each band’s music so that we can give it to the FSU radio station. We would LOVE to use this as an advertising tool. We intend to play songs from each band that will be featured in our benefit concert on the radio, then follow it with an ad about when and where the concert is, with hopefully a blip about what DTL is.
Lindsey contacted the radio station today and is making great headway with them. The sooner we get a venue the sooner we can start advertising
Justin’s goal is to have the venue in concrete by this Wednesday. Let’s see what we can do to make this happen.

Our potential, hopefull dates for the DTL:PH Benefit Concert is:
1.	Thursday November 4th
2.	Wednesday November 3rd
3.	Thursday November 12th
4.	Wednesday November 11th

We’re making great headway, we just really need to secure a venue. Please keep on track with this guys and keep the officers, as well as other members, informed about your progress. If you can’t get the info to everyone, send it to Kara (kro08d@fsu.edu or on facebook) and it will get mass emailed!

Creole!

This week’s phrase is “How are You”

como ou ye- How are you
muy bien- very well

Know it, we’re not asking it in English anymore!

Market Wednesday

We are on again for Market Wednesday this week. Please show up whenever you have a chance, but the schedule form last week is the general guideline as to what we’re after.

After the general meeting most of the group stayed and worked on our new banner. Justin and Kara got supplies to make a red and blue banner with our name, an inspiration quote, and facts about Haiti on it to use at Market Wednesdays and other events that we attend where we set up a booth.
Justin is going to finish the science board, which will be white in the center, blue and red on each flap, with photos of their poverty on one side, photos of us and them showing hope on the other, and facts about Haiti, as well as images of what we’ve accomplished while there in the center.
Kara is going to finish the banners.

Christian Expression Event
Friday, October 23- Sunday October 25th there will be a huge Christian gathering that we plan on attending, not because we are religiously affiliated, but because Christians at their best tend to be very generous!! It costs $200 to enter, but we are able to sell our jewelry and our t-shirts. We will make dirt cookies to show as emphasis, and this will be a GREAT opportunity to use our new banners, raise TONS of awareness, not to mention funds, and we will hopefully encourage people to give us donations. We also will have a HUGE audience where we can advertise for our benefit concert, which will hopefully be a week or two after the event. In order for it to be worth our money and time we need to get moving now. We need to make sure we have everything set up and ready to go so that we can kick butt at this event.

SGA

We can ask SGA for money for all kinds of things, but we must word our proposals just right. There is about $100K that can only be used for RSO Travel funds. Chris Roberts is going to be a big help. We want to submit a proposal for money to fund our travels before this Friday at Noon. It will be reviewed by Monday at 6:15 when SGA meets to review submissions. This can be done in the Union, room 209A by asking to speak with the accountants for the SGA Accounting office. JUSTIN AND CHRIS ROBERTS are hopefully doing this on Monday

We can also ask them to fund our T-shirts, the catch here is that we can not “sell” the T-shirts. What we can do it ask for “member dues” that will give each member a “free shirt.” Of course the money will go towards the organization, which would be the same as if we were selling it anyway. If we were to sell them at the concert, we could sell two tickets, a general admission, or a premium ticket, which comes with a “free shirt” and would be X amount of dollars more (X=ing the amount of money that we’d sell the shirt for)
T-Shirts

Because our T-shirt design is on both sides of the shirt, we are unable to get the $5 price. Justin has been in contact with the vendor to see what kind of deal we can work out. We still hope to have them within the next week.

General

The group has signed up to be re-recognized as an RSO. On Wednesday DJ is going to a seminar as part of the process.

We have a lot of new ideas regarding a second set of T-shirts, teaching Haitians a trade, as well as support letters. These will all be introduced at the next meeting.

We have made a few contacts with other Haitian-interested organizations and we hope to meet with them soon to discuss working together towards our goals.

Kara is going to call about advertising in the “toilet times” papers that are found in nearly every bathroom stall in the school. Justin is going to continue to try to make headway with the SLC to advertise there before movies.

Lindsey will hopefully have a revenue sheet made up for the group by the next time we meet so that we can all keep track of what we are spending our money on. There can be a section in the DTL Minutes Book for her sheets and any receipts that need to be kept.

Cultural Background for Haiti:

In order to give our members that have never been to Haiti a better understanding of what the culture that we are dealing with is like, each member that has been to Haiti shared something with the group.

Lindsey: Women work really hard 100% of the time, cooking cleaning all day. In northwest it is a desert like climate. The local population will wear whatever people bring them, but when possible the women dress conservatively. It is desirable that visitors also dress moderately.
DJ: The wealthy wear Hawaiian shirts, and there are a lot of people who wear Recycled crocs. For the most part, people there don’t need or really wear shoes, it seems as though their feet are impenetrable. Voodoo- what’s the basic idea? Smother out other people, you want to be on top of everyone else, its very self-serving. People that aren’t part of the voodoo religion still practice it. Priests are corrupt and by trickery they run the town.
James: The entire country is impoverished, its not like its just their neighborhood. Generational poverty has affected their value and what they believe they can do. We can try to teach them something, but it is hard to get them to believe that they can do it on their own and that they can make these things work. Ex: the garden, must teach them how to do it their culture, ex- they’re not going to do it at noon that’s just ridiculous to them because for the most part that is nap time. Lots of people claim to live in villages they don’t live in, no one knows where anyone belongs. They don’t feel entitled. As money moves in, it has become a stopping point for drug runs along the Caribbean. Good virtuous people used to be respected, but somewhere along the way with the drugs and the corrupt gvnt: money has become what is expected and respected. They will often buy large empty mansions with no furniture to appear wealthy.
Ashley: They are loving people who will remember you, which means a lot when we are trying to help them.
Reid: Noticed saddening desperation to which Voodoo is their outlet. Rely on curses that priest put on other people, rituals. It’s not like many religions, its a spiritual thing with fire up in mountains, drums, etc. It’s not just a charade, it is real to them. It is a beautiful country that needs all the help it can get
Sam: We should cater to their basic human survival mentality and say “if you want to be better than the next guy you will __” and tell them what we are trying to teach them. It can work to our advantage that all they want to do it help themselves. Try to focus on teaching them specialization. Teach them that by not competing with their neighbors but by making a different crop, they can trade and thus increase their profit and their standing.

Creole:

This week we introduced some Creole to the group. Each week we will try to learn five words of phrases to get ourselves prepared. It should be fun and educational.
We covered the basics of the language rules this week.

Benefit Concert

We are hitting the venues hard this week. We want to make sure we have a place set up and we have exciting news about bands.
These are the bands we are looking at for the first semester Benefit Concert:

Tyler Denning
The starlight getaway
Emily
Everletter
The Iccarus Account
Pawns of the Universe
Phlox

There are lots of ideas floating around about where and how to advertise. We want to go big this time, make sure everyone knows about our event and our group!
Ideas about places to advertise included the FSU radio, the SLC, and chalking, as well as local business if they allow us.

Market Wednesday

Starting this week we are going to be hitting up a table at Market Wednesday. We hope to have a banner completed for next week. This is the temporary line up for people to volunteer to work the table on Wednesdays.

845-10 Reid, Justin
10-11 Kara and Katie
11-12- Lindsey
12-1 Krista, Lindsey

This does not mean you aren’t welcome to come at other times, you certainly are always welcome to join!

Research Ideas:

In order to ensure we are making the most of the semester, there are things that the group has expressed interest in that we need to be researched. IF anyone wants to take the lead on a project or subject, please feel free. Let me know what you find, and of course, bring your research to meetings to share with the group!

- Constructive wetlands to treat wastewater: roots of plants to suck out nutrients of water and clean the water. And fertilize the plants
•	New technology in environmental engineering.
•	Shoot it through the crops. Depends on what ones, must be careful
•	Depends on what resources we take with us
•	Pipes underground, so there’s nowhere for it to be underground

-Brickets: Wood, pvc pipe, give it to them with paper and woodchips, shred it and pack it in there, a cake is made, the water comes out holes, they use that as charcoal instead of chopping down trees. Can be made from trash instead of killing more cactus to use.
•	Haven’t analyzed what kind of garbage is all over the roads

- What are the healthiest, yet easiest vegetables to grow, while ensuring we don’t further destroy their landscape.

Fundraisers

True Seminole campaign: get money from them. We need to talk to SGA and the Boosters club to find out how we can get in on this.

Christian heritage church. Ask if we can sell jewelry.

Apply to SGA- each RSO is eligible for a certain amount of money as long as it is not to sponsor an event that students must pay to go to. This can be used for pizza and/or ice-cream to either sell or give away as an extra incentive to attendees at our events

Conclusion

If you are interested, check out this website: journeytoforever.org as suggested by Sam.
If you are further interested in Haitian organizations, please feel free to check out
The Haitian Culture Club
The Global Haiti Initiative
The Haiti Outreach Committee

We would love to form more contacts with these groups and potentially work together on mutual goals down the road.

See you all next week at our meeting, Monday, September 21st at the STARBUCKS ON CAMPUS, NOT RM 323!

I will begin working on compiling our list of members and their respective contact information for you all.

Introduction and new members

This was out first meeting of the semester. Ashley talked to the group about how we got started, including her and James’ trip to Haiti Summer 2008.
Lindsey covered what we accomplished last year and what we accomplished when she and DJ visited Haiti this summer.

We now have a PSA with our information playing weekly on the FSU radio station, and Monday at 6 we had a 30 minute interview with the FSU D.J.

We had five new members come out Monday night, and one new member come on Sunday. Welcome to all six of our new members.

Reid has been to Haiti several times, speaks some Creole, and has already given us great ides on how to proceed this year.

Cybill was involved in Key Club, Invisible Children and humanitarian efforts at her high school and going to a huge help with the Benefit Concerts this year!

Sam had a lot of great ideas and tons of information on Haiti, bands, and sustainable solutions to poverty.

All our new members are going to be excellent additions to our team and we look forward to working with them!

Goals

The group discussed breaking from Living Waters Ministries: we want to focus on being humanitarian vs. religious. We have formed new connections with people across the state who go to Haiti to build hospitals, etc. Our main goal for the trip it driving down costs by cutting out the middleman.

We want to get moving immediately with a T-shirt design, Benefit concerts both this semester and next. We want these concerts to be BIG! Our goal for the concert are to have hundred of people, in a venue people know. We want to help out local bands by getting them out there, and help ourselves by bring awareness and funds to our cause.

We want to continue with the DTL jewelry line and the DTL dirt cookies, to raise awareness about the tragic poverty in Haiti while raising money for the group.

We are going to do our best to be at every First Friday at Railroad Square selling our merchandise and getting our name out there.

We want to reach out to students at TCC, FAMU, and other members of the community that aren’t attending college.

Groups

We are all a team, but in order to work more efficiently, we made teams to help us be more productive and organized.

On the Advertising and Awareness team we have Cybill, Katie, and Justin and Krista.
On the Concert team we have Chris, Sam, and Cybill
On the Research team we have Helden, Alli, DJ, and Sam.
On the Awareness team we have Cybill and Kara.
On the Fundraising team we have Kara, Alli and Justin.

At future meetings we will briefly meet in our subgroups to discuss what each group is working on, and then we will meet as a whole to cover the general news that each subgroup has to offer.

This is going to be a great year for us all. We have a lot to do to meet our goals, but I know we can do it!

Future Meetings

Next week there will not be a meeting due to the FSU vs. Miami game that starts at 8pm on Monday night. We will continue meeting every Monday at 8pm the following week, September 14th at 8pm in the Union ballroom 323.
